Salford added a fourth goal in the 56th minute when Adelakun slotted home his second penalty of the match, after Ellis Iandolo had been adjudged to have fouled Shephard in the box.
Colchester pulled a goal back in the 66th minute when Iandolo lashed home a left-foot strike after Kelleher had helped on Arthur Read's corner but it was Salford's day.
